Prairie Wildflowers and Seed Collection
Wednesday September 27, 2023
9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Age 18 and Older
The session will begin with an introduction to the biology and identification of common prairie wildflowers. Prairies once were common to southern Wisconsin, but have been replaced by farmland and/or human development. Prairie plants have amazing root systems that are able to penetrate deep to reach water and cultivate amazingly fertile soil. They are also vital to the survival of pollinators, birds, small mammals, etc. Participants will then collect wildflower seeds in the adjacent Jersey Flats prairie. Participants will be able to keep these seeds in hopes that each may use them to cultivate prairie species on their own, thus replacing a small 'slice' of what has been lost.
